Woman meditating at BeachYou can easily use self-hypnosis to help you overcome specific problems, bad habits, fears or limited beliefs that hold you back in life.

You will need two elements for self-hypnosis: a state of receptivity like focus attention or light trance and your specific affirmation. James Braid, who coined a word hypnosis in 1849, would call this process mono-ideaism. A process of focusing on one single idea, making it part of your unconscious belief system. Once this idea is accepted by the mind, it will begin to affect your behavior and actions in a new and positive way.

Clinical hypnotists use hypnotic inductions to help their clients achieve a state of receptivity. You can also establish such state on your own. Meditation, breathing techniques, chanting, listening to calming music or sitting in nature – are all great ways to enter a state of deep relaxation.

Before you enter that state, you have to know your affirmation. How do you design such perfect simple affirmation? If you are trying to eliminate a bad habit, then simply use a suggestion like ” I am now a non-smoker. Smoking doesn’t fit me anymore”, “I let my nails heal, Nail biting doesn’t fit me anymore”, “Drinking is a thing of the past. I choose not to drink.” As you see from these examples, each affirmation consists of two short sentences, making it more sound and powerful. Make sure your affirmations are stated in present tense and have a positive meaning.

If you are trying to overcome a problem, like stage fright, anxiety, fear of something specific or release a limiting pattern, then ask yourself what you want  and why you don’t have it. Whatever negative belief you receive to your second question, simply reframe it into a new positive belief statement and work with it.

For example, if you want to have a better job or work opportunity enter your life, ask yourself why you don’t have it now. You may receive an answer like: “I am not good enough”, “I am not that smart”, “I am not lucky” or “I am not ready”, or that “It is hard to get a good job”, “I don’t deserve it” and so on. Look at these beliefs and start reframing them into positive belief statements. Read them out loud a few times. It will begin to shift your perception and the way you think. Then try to come up with one good and strong belief statement that encompasses the meaning of all of these new positive beliefs. For example, the counter belief statement to the above example of negative beliefs could be something like this:  “I create new opportunities, I easily find a new job, I am always good and deserving.”

After you have designed your positive affirmation, use any technique you know to help you relax deeply into a state of meditation. Many of you already know how to meditate or at least you can attend a meditation class and learn how to relax mentally.

When you meditate, take your time, don’t rush, allow yourself to enjoy the state of thoughtlessness for a while. Then slowly begin repeating your affirmation silently with your inner voice for about 10-20 minutes, maybe raising the volume of your voice if appropriate. Let it slowly sink into your unconscious.

In this part of my blog under category ” Hypnosis and my 2013 Yoga Passbook.” I shall document my experience with NYC yoga/dance classes. Aug 1st/2013 (day1) -My first day of yoga was at Exhlale on Central Park West called Exhale Chill. Having taking many yoga classes before, I have to say this one was one of the most  unusual. It was a super slow yoga, where you go over 6-8 postures and just relax on each one of them  for about 5-8 minutes.  My yoga teacher Marcy Tropin was very attentive and personable.  She was connecting with everyone either through her advising touch or something she would say in the beginning of the class or at the end to each student.

Hypnosis Course “Hypnosis 101 with Elena Beloff”

In 2011 during the filming of my documentary film about hypnosis, I taught an intensive Hypnosis 101 one-day course to a small group of 6 students. This was one of the most exciting experiences, as I congested the most important aspects of hypnotism under 6 hours: brief history, hypnotic inductions, how to form suggestions and some stage hypnosis tricks. This hypnosis training course was also filmed in its entirety and is finally available for sale in 6 parts.

As I started the class, I of course had a plan, but I also decided to go with the flow and follow the energy of my group. By energy I simply mean my students’ state of being, the degree of their openness to suggestion and how far they wanted to explore within themselves. To my own surprise the group was very open-minded and eager not only to learn hypnosis, but also to dig deep within themselves and play out various inner parts that they wouldn’t normally act out.

During the class, I hypnotized them to be their favorite celebrities, animals, regress to being children and my personal favorite – to switch gender. Getting in touch with these inner parts allowed my students a greater sense of self-expression, insights and overcoming certain fears and inhibitions.

In the beginning, I have used a few volunteers to demonstrate and teach them a few popular hypnotic inductions, such as Dave Elman and Flower’s Method, mixing them up with progressive relaxation and eye and arm catalepsy. After these demonstrations, I focused on the entire group – I used a popular handclasp suggestibility test, leading with a hypnotic induction to deep relaxation. Each time I brought my subjects to awake state and then back to trance, it became easier and easier to induce a deeper somnambulistic state of trance, because they were beginning to be more and more naturally conditioned to go back to deep relaxation. As they went back and forth unexpectedly in a short time, this process overall created a state of receptivity to suggestion throughout the class.

After some time, all I needed is a word “Sleep!” And my subjects would plunge into a state of deep trance on command. This gave me an opportunity to work with their inner unconscious processes, imagination and creativity.

They thoroughly enjoyed being their favorite celebrities, which allowed them to feel and act like these famous people: they experienced their confidence, stance and view of the world. This is a powerful exercise, which could be so mind blowing, as it literally shifts a subject’s perception, widening the horizons and one’s possibilities. Among these celebrities were Angelina Jolie, Brat Pitt, Barack Obama, Denzel Washington and Lisa Bonet.

Regressing to being a kid could also be quite enlightening, as you give yourself a permission to experience the world anew with a sense of naiveté, openness and joix-de-vivre. As adults grow up they often acquire a set of limiting beliefs, emotional baggage which tends to torment them in life, prohibiting from enjoying it to its fullest. Inner child can evoke an openness and trust which you once had in the beginning of your life, un-infected by the useless limiting patterns, fears and beliefs. It’s nice and healing to experience this joy and a sense of lightness again.

Finally, switching gender while hypnotized has always been one of the most insightful and eye opening to the hypnotized subjects. As one gets to experience the model of the world of another gender through the specific behavior of the opposite sex, their beliefs and value systems – it becomes easier to understand one another and also improves communication between a man and a woman.

How to hypnotize yourself

Does self-hypnosis work?

People often ask me if self-hypnosis works and  what’s the best way to do self-hypnosis. There are many ways, of course. You can listen to self-hypnosis audios with a hypnotic induction leading to trance. You can meditate using deep breathing techniques or your personal mantras. You can also look at various hypnotic moving visuals, like the waves of the ocean. Or you can use hypnotic visuals still images, like spirals for example. The goal of all of these methods is to help you achieve a thoughtless state of mind, where you no longer judge your environment or the information that comes into your mind.

I found a hypnotic spiral on fotolia images, which doesn’t look like a usual hypnosis spiral. It’s actually a square, which consists of many circles with warm light red to black colors. If you look at this hypnotic image, after a few seconds you will find yourself getting hypnotized, all thoughts will naturally begin to push away into the distance. You will feel a subtle relaxation in your facial muscles. Even your eyes will feel hypnotized, feeling a little heavy and very relaxed. A soothing wave of relaxation will spread down into your nose and cheeks, all the way down into your chin. Try it for yourself. Just stare at this image below for a few moments. Once you feel relaxed, you can simply say your positive affirmations out loud, letting them sink deep into your unconscious mind. For example, if you want to feel more focused and productive today you can use these affirmations:

I feel more focused today    My mind is sharp and clear   I have a great memory

I accomplish more every day   I feel more and more productive  Ideas come naturally to me

I feel more energized now    My thoughts are positive   I am driven   I succeed every day
